La più vecchia nave da crociera!

Ha quasi 60 anni e continua a navigare la più vecchia nave da crociera ancora in attività. Si chiama Princess Daphne e proprio poco tempo fa è stata ceduta dalla Classic International Cruises alla Ambiente Kreuzfahrten tedesca. Stazza lorda di 15.833 tonnellate, lunga 162 metri, vanta 241 cabine e ospita fino a 594 passeggeri e 240 membri d'equipaggio. Varata nel 1955 dal cantiere inglese Swan Hunter, nacque come nave da carico con il nome di Port Sydney. Venne poi trasformata in unità da crociera di lusso da una società armatrice greca e ribattezzata Akrotiri Express. Con il nome di Daphne passò successivamente all'italiana Costa che la utilizzo anche per i giri del mondo. Ceduta, divenne la Switzerland e poi la Ocean Monarch. Nel 2008 ha subito importanti lavori di refitting e di aggiornamento sicurezza. Anche la gemella Princess Danae, sempre del '55, è ancora in attività.

The oldest cruise ship still in operation is almost 60 years old! The Princess Daphne was recently sold by Classic International Cruises to Germany's Ambiente Kreuzfahrten. With a gross rating of 15.833 tonnes, she is 162 metres long, offers 241 cabins and accommodates up to 594 passengers and 240 crew. Launched in 1955 by Britain's Swan Hunter yard, she was originally a freighter named Port Sydney. She was then converted into a luzury cruise liner by a Greek company and renamed Akrotiri Express. Under the new name of Daphne she was then acquired by Italy's Costa. She later became the Switzerland and then the Ocean Monarch. She underwent a major refit in 2008, including modernisation of her safety systems. Her sister ship, the Princess Danae, almost exactly the same age, is also still active.
