Silver Explorer in Antartide |
Nave da crociera della Holland America Line nei pressi dell'Antartide |
In recent years Antarctic cruises have become increasingly popular. However, the delicate environmental balance here has led theinternational organisations responsible for protecting the local environment to impose tight limits on cruise ships. Those carrying over 500 passengers, which normally burn highly-polluting RFO-type fuel, are now restricted to using light fuels. Not all companies have signed up to this, preffering to abandon their routes. One exception is the Holland America Line, which has modified three of its ships. The restrictions do not apply to vessels carryng fewer than 500 passengers, which includes most of those described as expedition ships, like some Russian ice-breakers or smaller luxury cruise ships like Silversea's Silver Explorer and Seabourn's Seabourn Quest.
